The Banner You Won't See Tonight

Tonight we have a midweek match thousands of miles from home. In spite of the time and location, the Timbers Army will be out in force. The East Coast Platoon and other travelers will be supporting our boys in the stands with songs and chants in record numbers for a Wednesday night in New England. You'll hear them singing, you'll see them cheering. One thing you won't see, however, is this overhead banner in the stands.

Today, the day of the match, the Revs FO refused entry to this apparently horribly offensive banner:

Was there a size restriction? Nope, not specifically. The Revs FO didn't give any specifics on dimension restrictions, and in fact stated that they "try to allow for supporters groups to bring in larger banners."

Was it in violation of MLS standards? Nope. In spite of the fact that they've been marketing this match as one where they play MLS Cup winners Portland Timbers, and in spite of the fact that the Revs FO admit that the poster doesn't violate any MLS content rules, they still won't allow it into the stadium.

Apparently being five times a bridesmaid and never a bride makes one very thin-skinned and grumpy.

The Revs/stadium staff have always pulled this kind of crap. I remember in 1996, the final game of the regular season, the Foxboro Stadium security people threaten to kick us Crew fans out for playing drums. Never mind, the Revs supporters were playing drums and other instruments just a few sections away.

Congrats on being a Revs fan…it must be terribly lonely.

Haaaaa haaaaaaaaaaa. The banner would have at least made your stadium look more full.

“Hipsterland” should really be one word and capitalized (how original by the way!). And from the attendance at your stadium I’d say “no one cares” would be more accurate when describing your “supporters” and club.

I can’t believe that you’d publish such an obscene image on a public website, let alone attempt to show it in a public venue.

I think this would look great, magnified many times, when the Revs next visit us.

I would like to offer an idea to get around these things.
Use 12-14 large tshirts to make the banner..Cut one side of each shirt to use both front and back, and line the cut sides using velcro so that they become tshirts again. Have all away members wear them into the stadium, take them off and velcro them together to make the 1 large banner again.

Speaking as a fan of an MLS team which, like the Revs, has never won the Cup despite being a charter member, but having won 7 World Series and 3 Stanley Cups in my lifetime…
New England is a lovely place, and its people are usually good. But when the subject turns to sports, SOME (not all, or even most) of them turn into really thin-skinned dopes. They can dish it out, but they can’t take it.
    KEEP PORTLAND WEIRD. And snarky.
